What is Body Plethysmography?

Body plethysmography is a noninvasive pulmonary function test that measures lung volumes and airway resistance. This test provides critical insights into lung health, aiding in the diagnosis and treatment of various respiratory conditions.

The test is easy to carry out for the patient. In contrast to a spirometry test no unnatural breathing maneuver are required.

Why is it so important?

Body plethysmography is one of the key diagnostic tools
for lung and airway diseases, such as:

In addition, this test:

Spirometry as a basis

Lung function tests, including pulmonary function tests, are crucial for diagnosing and managing respiratory conditions such as asthma, COPD, and pulmonary fibrosis. These tests measure lung capacity and help assess overall lung health through various metrics.

Spirometry is a fundamental noninvasive test that directly measures several key lung volumes:

These measurements are essential elements of a ventilatory pulmonary function test, providing critical insights into lung capacity and function.

Residual Volume (RV), the air remaining in the lungs after a full exhalation, is more challenging to measure directly. Therefore, indirect methods are used:

Other methods are:

Different Resistance Loops

Normal

Obstruction (homogenous, e.g. Asthma)

Obstruction (inhomogenous, peripheral, e.g. Ephysema)

Sudden loss of flow (e.g. obesity)

Stenosis

Why is the residual capacity important?

The residual volume functions to maintain the patency of alveoli even after maximal forced expiration. In healthy lungs, the air that makes up the residual volume is utilized for continual gas exchange between breaths. An absence of residual volume would lead to a collapse of the airways. In COPD, the RV can be drastically increased, which heavily decreases the performance of the lungs.

Airway resistance

Additionally to lung volumes, the patient-cooperation free measurement of the airway resistance is another important measurement parameter of a body plethysmography. As the measurement of this parameter only requires tidal breathing, it can be also used with small children from 2 years of age.

The shape airway resistance loop is capable of directly indicate the type airway impairment to the medial professional.

Maximum compatible software platform

The LFX software is our user-friendly interface, developed with the physiologist in mind. The Patient Management interface provides all the tools necessary to perform every task done in the laboratory, while remaining easy to operate.

Built on state- of-the-art Windows tools like .Net, C# and MySQL or MSSQL database, the LFX software is the future of modern respiratory diagnostics.

The LFX software has built-in quality control monitoring based on ATS/ERS guidelines, which are accessible during and after the measurements are performed.

Important considerations

When considering options for lung function tests, it’s important to compare different methods based on accuracy, ease of use, and affordability. Body plethysmography, for example, is highly accurate and provides comprehensive data but may be more costly and require more complex equipment compared to spirometry, which is simpler and more affordable for basic lung function assessments.

In summary, both spirometry and body plethysmography are invaluable for assessing lung health. They offer insights into lung capacity and are instrumental in diagnosing and managing respiratory conditions like asthma, COPD, and pulmonary fibrosis. For patients and healthcare providers looking to buy lung function test equipment, considering factors such as ease of use and affordability is crucial to ensure the best fit for their specific needs.
